I have a pile of TMZ that I was given years ago, and it is very expired. I believe it's about 15-20 years old. After shooting a couple of rolls I was disappointed by how it performed, but recently I have been thinking about how I could use the very grainy results to accentuate texture and age.
The first step was deciding on a development routine. I like HC-110, and hear that it has some mild anti-fog properties. Additionally, I have some 1% benzotriazole here for paper that I could use.
After some research, here is the recipe I came up with:
T-Max 3200
EI: 400
Pre-soak in plain water for at least 2 minutes before development
Developer: HC-110 dilution B (1:31)
Restrainer: Benzotriazole 1% solution, 9mL per liter of developer
Temperature: 70 degrees Fahrenheit
Time: 10:00 minutes
This gave me usable negatives with the grain I was looking for, but not mottled or thin like I've had in the past. Here's some scans to show you the results:
